Custom homebuilding should be entirely that, custom. In every sense of the word. Every detail should be discussed, from the configuration of cabinetry, to the texture on the walls, and the type, finish, and placement of hardware. Every element adds a layer to the overall character of a space. There are a lot of beautiful details that can create a home that is a reflection of you. If you stay true to what makes you happy it will always feel like home.
My favorite details are the combination of industrial textures like concrete with luxury finishes like brass. Or reeded cabinetry with iron. It's fun to mix it up, even if it doesn't make sense to everyone, if it makes you smile every time you see it, then you know you got it right. If something doesn't feel right, continue to alter elements of the space until you love it. Beautiful design and execution takes time and tweaking. It's part of the process. Don't force it. Be patient and let your home evolve.
